We are looking to recruit a temporary Historic Environment Record (HER) Assistant to our Historic Environment Team, which sits within the larger Development Management and Planning Policy Group. The primary function of this post is the enhancement of the Lancashire Historic Environment Record (HER), through the integration of the results from the Lancashire Local Heritage List project.
About us:
Lancashire County Council is one of the largest local authorities in the UK, covering a substantial urban and rural area in north-west England encompassing 12 district councils. It has a rich and diverse archaeological and built heritage ranging from early prehistoric findspots to Medieval castles, and from iconic textile industry townscapes to Britain's first motorway standard road.
The County Council hosts the Historic Environment Team, who support the management of change by providing information and advice relating to the historic environment of Lancashire. The team manages the County HER which is a key resource for information on archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes in Lancashire. The team also provides advice to all the local planning authorities in Lancashire including the Unitary Councils of Blackpool, and Blackburn with Darwen on the impact of development relating to the historic environment.
About the role:
The main responsibility of the post involves accessioning new information into the Lancashire HER from the Lancashire Local Heritage List project. This project identified Local Heritage Assets across the county for inclusion on a Local Heritage List, and includes local buildings, structures, sites and landscapes that have historic or heritage merit and contribute to the character of their area.
In addition to the Local Heritage List work, there will also be some scope to update existing records and input new information into the HER from archaeological reports and other research, and also supply heritage information to users in a variety of digital formats and ensure that users of the HER understand the nature of the record and how to use it appropriately.
This role plays a key part in ensuring data quality and further development of the HER, ensuring it accurately reflects the depth of archaeological knowledge across Lancashire.
This is a temporary post for 6 months.
About you:
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent in Archaeology or other related discipline, considerable relevant experience, and experience of working with database software and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Previous experience of working with a Historic Environment Record, HBSMR database software and ArcGIS Pro would be an advantage.
The role is based at County Hall in Preston; however we embrace flexible working and support a variety of working arrangements to meet the needs of both individuals and the organisation.
